Most youth of today have it imprinted into their mind that they MUST go to college, it is simply an unwritten rule. But... is it truly a necessity for success in life?
We live in a world where almost every high level job requires a high leveled degree, and this is why college has became a staple in the path of most teenagers. However, I encourage each and every one of you to consider your own journey, and see where college fits into that, if at all.
If you want a job that requires a degree, you should absolutely go to college. However, one thing should be considered.
Do you truly want that job?
We all need to reflect on ourselves and the path we are in to see if it is something we truly desire. Many people pick a job out of fear of disappointing their families, or out of fear of failing. I have written about failure in another blog, please check that out if you would like to hear more about failing in life. You need to pick a job for yourself, a career and path that suits you and your passions, not anyone else.
If you choose a career that does not require a college degree, college may not be in the cards for you, and that is okay.
College is expensive, we all know this. If you want to be something in this world, such as an entrepreneur, that does not require a college degree, not attending college may be the smarter option. You have to learn not to listen to the judgement of others, including family, who will think you are making a mistake. At the end of the day, you have to do what is right for you and your life.
College can teach you a lot... socially, economically, and academically. So in no way am I arguing that college is a bad thing, or is to be avoided by everyone. However, to some, college is a setback economically and career wise. It can be a huge waste of time if you are simply going to please people, and are not using it as a way to propel your future. You can meet people and become more social without college, and you can learn key skills for life without it as well. If you have not yet found yourself and your desired path, college can be seen as a way to discover your passions, but with how expensive it is, I encourage you all to discover yourself before jumping into college, to ensure that when in college you can focus on propelling yourself forward in your field. College is a stepping stone in the path of those who need a degree for their desired future, and may be better to be left on the side of the road on your particular journey. Do not fear judgement, and do not fear failure. You are not a failure until you conform to others instead of yourself. Stay true.
